H.P. LOVECRAFT

Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937): American writer of horror-fiction, born in Providence, R.I., where he lived most of his life. Though only having a small cult following while he was still living, he was later recognized as one of the most influential and finest writers of horror since Poe. Among his most memorable literary inventions are the fabled NECRONOMICON, an ancient book of evil magic, and the "CTHULHU MYTHOS", a body of interwoven stories of powerful alien beings called the OLD ONES, who ruled the earth eons before man's existence and who are said to return "when the stars are right".


BROWN JENKIN

Among the most horrifying characters from Lovecraft's, "Dreams in the Witch-House", Brown Jenkin was the familiar of an evil witch who discovered spells to allow transcendence of time and space. With the aid of the nefarious Brown Jenkin, the witch terrorized a young college student who occupied a queerly shaped room in an ancient old house in Arkham, a house the witch herself had lived in, during the late 1600's.

"... no larger than a good sized rat and quaintly called by the townspeople, "BROWN JENKIN" - seemed to have been the fruit of a remarkable case of sympathetic herd-delusion, for in 1692, no less than eleven persons had testified to glimpsing it. There were recent rumors, too, with a baffling and disconcerting amount of agreement. Witnesses said it had long hair and the shape of a rat, but that it's sharp-toothed, bearded face was evilly human while it's paws were like tiny human hands. It took messages betwixt old Keziah and the devil, and was nursed on the witch's bliid, which it sucked like a vampire. It's voice was a kind of loathsome titter, and could speak all languages. Of all the bizarre monstrosities in Gilman's dreams, nothing filled him with greater panic and nausea than this blasphemous and diminutive hybrid..."
